Grandmother Tips

As my son gets older and I get more grey hair, I wonder what kind of advice I will give to my grandkids.

My three grandmothers where always giving me sermons instead of tips. “Be careful with your money”, “Don´t get involved with that girl”, “Save”, “Get a haircut, you look like a hippie”, and all those classic parental comments.

Here's a trailer for John Maclean's new short, featuring three of my favorite things: Black and white film, Michael Fassbender, and an overall sense of Gulliness.

Ernest Hemingway Quotes

All things truly wicked start from innocence

I've seen you, beauty, and you belong to me now, whoever you are waiting for and if I never see you again, I thought. You belong to me and all Paris belongs to me and I belong to this notebook and this pencil.

I didn't want to kiss you goodbye – that was the trouble – I wanted to kiss you goodnight. And there's a lot of difference.

Write drunk; edit sober.

Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.

Never mistake motion for action.

I love sleep. My life has the tendency to fall apart when I'm awake, you know?

His talent was as natural as the pattern that was made by the dust on a butterfly's wings. At one time he understood it no more than the butterfly did and he did not know when it was brushed or marred. Later he became conscious of his damaged wings and of their construction and he learned to think and could not fly any more because the love of flight was gone and he could only remember when it had been effortless.

I write one page of masterpiece to ninety one pages of shit.

All good books have one thing in common. They are truer than if they had really happened.

I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.

Courage is grace under pressure.

When you have shot one bird flying you have shot all birds flying. They are all different and they fly in different ways but the sensation is the same and the last one is as good as the first.

All thinking men are atheists.

Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime.

There is nothing noble to being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.

You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintery light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person died for no reason.

Been There, Done That

The Shoes - Time to Dance

Featuring mass-murdering Jake Gyllenhaal. Awesome.

Sterling Hundley

Illustration is Blue Collar – both pervasive and accessible. It is art that must survive in spite of commerce and function. There is a desperation to the thing; illustration that doesn’t work doesn’t eat. Given limitations in time to communicate and the space in which to do it, illustration must answer a question.
Fine Art is White Collar – reclusive with airs of mystery and sophistication. It is pursued. Given the abundance of space in which it is viewed and the time which it is afforded, fine art has the luxury of asking a question.

- Sterling Hundley, from his upcoming book Blue Collar/White Collar

Walt

Is this a Walt Disney biopic starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Ron Howard? Unfortunately, it's not a real film, but a nice design by French artist Pascal Witaszek.

Eric Yahnker

Eric Yahnker continues to prove that humor has a place in contemporary fine art. His meticulously rendered graphite and colored pencil drawings pick apart pop culture and politics in a way that, at the very least, deserve a look and a laugh.

Negative Liberty

Darrel Perkins. Negative Liberty. Linocut. 2012

The concept of negative liberty defines freedom as the absence of restrictions within society such as classism, sexism, and racism.

"In order to be able to obey, it is necessary to be able to command oneself."

Madonna / Whore Complex

Darrel Perkins. Madonna / Whore Complex. Linocut and Watercolor. 2012

The Madonna / Whore Complex is a psychological complex first theorized by Freud where men see women as either saintly madonnas or debased prostitutes. Men with this complex desire a sexual partner who has been degraded (the whore) while they cannot desire the respected partner (the Madonna). The duality of these sexual identities implies that women assume subservient roles, either as the maternal wife to be protected or as whores to be punished by men.

"Where such men love they have no desire, and where they desire they cannot love."
- Sigmund Freud

Vincent Gallo Quotes

Thoughts from the acclaimed writer / director / actor / producer / composer / model / former bandmate of Jean Michel Basquiat / professional motorcycle racer /
artist / rapper / Republican / charming asshole.

Also, his sperm is available for purchase.

I`m not an artist, I`m a hustler. As a hustler I`ve done many things. You should really believe it when I tell you that, `cause I`m not being sarcastic. I`m a total hustler. What that means is I`ve hustled to make a buck and I`ve hustled to change the world and I`ve hustled to take revenge - but it`s always hustling. I`ve never had a career or a single goal. I`ve never been formally educated. To get things together, to make a living, I constantly have to hustle.

I don`t trust or love anyone. Because people are so creepy. Creepy creepy creeps. Creeping around. Creeping here and creeping there. Creeping everywhere. Crippity crappity creepies.

I became an actor, because of Danny Bonaduce on the Partridge Family". He`s tremendous, so funny and brilliant, and we seemed around the same age, I felt I should be on a show with him. We could have done a good spin-off, "the Danny Bonaduce, Vinnie Gallo show", da-da-da-da- da di da da."

I`m so in love with the United States. Not as a patriot. I`m in love with America like it`s my first girlfriend. The geography, the people, the smell, the touch, the taste, the gas stations. I`m madly in love with America. Madly in love. And I was the guy that people used to say, He`s so European." I mean, I never felt like that. I don`t relate to those monkeys. I just can`t relate to them. I`m a super American--Captain America.

I stopped painting in 1990 at the peak of my success just to deny people my beautiful paintings. And I did it out of spite.

My parents took an interest in nothing, at home no books, no records. My mother and my father are the emblem of indifference, dryness and bad taste. My father is also terribly stingy, in life as well as in feelings: I have never seen him filling up the bathtub. To save, he used to put the water 4 inches from the bottom. At home everything was ugly, casual, lacking in love, from furniture to clothes, to behaviors...

I never wanted to be an actor. I never want to be an actor. I want to be a movie star. The whole idea of having to act is too gruesome. It`s too ambitious for me.
