Darrel Perkins. Madonna / Whore Complex. Linocut and Watercolor. 2012 |
The Madonna / Whore Complex is a psychological complex first theorized by Freud where men see women as either saintly madonnas or debased prostitutes. Men with this complex desire a sexual partner who has been degraded (the
whore) while they cannot desire the respected partner (the Madonna). The duality of these sexual identities implies that women assume subservient roles, either as the maternal wife to be protected or as whores to be punished by men.
"Where such men love they have no desire, and where they desire they cannot love."
